SEE SAW: Independence in the Balance

Hosted by Ellie Seeley and Sam Sawyer · Society and culture · New episodes weekly

About the show

Eleanor "Ellie" Seeley, 54. Blind since childhood. Traditional accessibility, dry humour, fiercely practical.

Samantha "Sam" Sawyer, 46. Lost her sight in her thirties. PostAccessibility enthusiast, playful provocateur, incurable explorer.

Twelve years of friendship. Two different philosophies. A shared intolerance of accessibility bullshit.

And the deliciously cheesy coincidence of their surnames is never, ever explained.

SEE SAW sounds like a slightly old-fashioned television review programme, but its subject is one of the most important questions of the coming decades:

When technology can do almost anything for us, what does independence actually mean?

Episodes

Come and Get Me, and the rise of Speculative Accessibility Ellie and Sam review Charlotte Joanne's Come and Get Me stories, and spend most of the episode arguing about whether independence means doing things yourself or deciding when you'd rather not. Sam thinks the robot should have crossed the car park. Ellie thinks the robot should have stayed in the boot. They agree about the dog.

Charlotte Joanne: Come and Get Me, the graphic novel She turned Come and Get Me into a graphic novel. We had questions about authorship, quality assurance and the problem of evaluating pictures through machine-generated descriptions. She asked whether we'd enjoyed reading her book. Featuring a dog with no legs, and the reasonable adjustments she has made for sighted readers.
